Afrikaans language – Did you know?

Afrikaans is a language spoken in southern Africa, primarily in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The language Afrikaans has its roots in seventeenth century Dutch but has been influenced by many languages including English, Malay, German, Portuguese, French and some African languages.

Up until the 19th century, Afrikaans was only a spoken language and Dutch was used as the formal and written language. Afrikaans developed among Dutch speaking Protestant settlers, and the slave workforce of the Cape area in south-western South Africa which was established by the Dutch East India Company (Dutch: Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC, Afrikaans: Verenigde Oos-Indiese Kompanjie) between 1652 and 1705. The majority of these first settlers were from the United Provinces (now The Netherlands), although there were also many from Germany, a considerable number from France, and some from Norway, Portugal, Scotland, and various other countries. The indentured workers and slaves were Asians, Malays, Malagasy in addition to the indigenous Khoi and Bushmen.

On 14 August 1875 the GRA, an organization that promoted the Afrikaans language, was formed by Rev. S.J. Du Toit. The first complete translation of the Bible into Afrikaans was finished in 1933. After 1948 the language was promoted alongside Afrikaner nationalism and played an important role in minority white rule in Apartheid South Africa. With the new constitution of South Africa in 1996, it was again accepted as one of the official languages of South Africa.
